An introduction from John Wright, Head Coach:
In May, Daren Woods and I started the Back to Hockey sessions and from the start had a great turn out, averaging 16-20 players . The players ranged in ability from those, who in their younger days, had played at a decent level, to the majority, who were "New to Hockey" adults. Some have children playing in our junior section.
I was concerned about making the sessions too physically demanding. However, from the warm ups through some basics drills and small sided games, everyone worked hard at the levels that suited them . I was impressed with the way people mixed and helped each other, and after some initial shyness from one or two, everyone quickly grew in confidence and ability.
HITESH Highly recommended for mums & dads /ex players wanting to try social hockey. Great supportive coaches providing a really enjoyable "tactical" workout.
We managed to keep the bar open most weeks in spite of being "off season" and I was particularly impressed with the ability of some of the Ladies to knock back a glass of prosecco after all the hard work.
Initially, just six sessions were planned, but as there were consistent numbers, by popular demand we ended up running through to early July. It all culminated in a local derby against Waltham Forest HC , where many got their first ever taste of a competitive, full size match . Drawn 1-1, everybody enjoyed the game and there is now much demand for a rematch and further games.
TESS After 6 weeks of back to hockey I am a little bit fitter, have rediscovered some long forgotten hockey skills, have had a lot of fun and most importantly have made lots of new friends in the club. A big thank you to John and Daren who were really encouraging to all and organised sessions that developed our skills and improved our fitness levels. The friendly match at the end was a real highlight, played on a hot and humid Saturday morning at Old Loughts. We were all very grateful that the good turnout for the match allowed us plenty of subs!
We are starting a programme of social mixed games on Sundays where anyone can turn up, including the back to hockey players. A number of the latter will start to play in the Club's lower XI's and who knows where they will progress from there.
The sessions were great fun to coach due to the enthusiasm and commitment shown .
Once holiday season is out of the way , we will arrange the next group of sessions as we have more potential players already interested and the Olympics may spur more to dust off or pick up a stick .
SIMON I have immensely enjoyed the whole experience, from meeting new people to learning what a great game hockey is. I always enjoyed watching Rosie play, but I didn't know I'd love playing this much. And that is all down to the outstanding work done by John and Daren, who have made sure every session improves our skills while at the same time making them loads of fun. It's just a great time and I genuinely look forward to it every week.
