Hockey Headlines 180

Last Weekend & The Weekend Ahead ?

With 2 Wins and 2 Draws the Ladies Section had a solid weekend and match reports can be seen below for the Ladies 1’s and 2’s

The Men’s section also respectable results for the majority of the section with wins for the 1’s 2’s4’s5’sand 6’s a draw for the Men’s 3’s and narrow defeats for the 7’s and 8th Teams .

For the Ladies 1’s It was a case of what might have been for Old Loughts Ladies 1s away at Ipswich-East Suffolk. Despite falling behind against the run of play after 12 minutes, Loughts duly responded with some fine attacking hockey.

On 20 minutes, Laura Oglesby forced the ball home after a goal line scramble to level the game. Loughts then took control of the game in the final 5 minutes of the first half. Chelsey Toms made no mistake from a penalty stroke after Emily Holmes’ penalty corner was illegally stopped on the line. Holmes then finished an excellent move from Chloe Rogers and Kiera Dawes to give Loughts a 3-1 lead at the break.

However the second half did not go to plan, as IES pulled a goal back 10 minutes after the break and then leveled from a penalty corner with 17 minutes remaining.

Loughts had numerous opportunities to seal the win but IES defended resolutely and the points were eventually shared.

For the Ladies 2’s  they are climbing the league table.Emily Goodhew put in the following special report to HH  :

Our fortress was ably defended by Avril, Laura, Kate, Dottie and Rachel, resulting in a strong defence and play being switched from right to left. This freed up our Mids, to create and find the gaps to set the Forwards free to pressurise our opponents which they did on a regular basis.

At half time we were two goals to the good following on from free and skilful play. Gravy's midfield dribbling opened up the play, feeding the ball to our Forwards, Karen, Maisy, Georgia and Lucy. Strong goals from Georgia and G set the scene for the second half.

However, after the break, UCL came back with increased intensity and following some sustained pressure reduced the score line to 2-1. No more goals were allowed through, with Hannah coming out best with a few one on ones and excellent saves. For a while it looked like the lead could be lost but, after absorbing the pressure, and with everyone pulling together, egged on by much “encouragement” from Dave on the sidelines, we retook control of the game.

When UCL looked threatening, Eleanor, Ella, G and Heather in left and right midfield, tracked back and successfully pressurised the opposition. This sustained effort led to two more goals: a short corner, injected with pin-point accuracy by Karen and duly converted by Kim with a straight strike, followed by yet another short corner successfully converted by Heather directing the ball over the goalkeeper from close range.

An all round strong team performance, ensured this well earned victory

Coming Up – This weekend  at The Club

there are home games for the Men’s 4’s followed by the Ladies 1s , Ladies 2’s and Mens 1s  on pitch 1 ( at 16:30). Pitch 2 features the Supervets followed by Mens 7s , Mens 6s and an inter club game to rival spectator thrills between the Mens 8th XI.

Mixed Team to Kick Off with Fixture Against Wapping .(Players Needed)

As mentioned in last week’s edition of Hockey Headlines , Emily Goodhew has agreed to Captain the new Mixed Team for the Club and they now have their first fixture lined up against a strong Wapping Team on Sunday .

Mixed hockey is often a little more social and relaxed but we understand that Wapping put out quite a stong group so any of the Mens Teams in particular that want more quality hockey , ;et Emily know your interest as she still has some spaces left .(
