16.02.10 - LADIES DRAW AT CAMBRIDGE:

This weekend the Ladies 1s could only muster a 1-1 draw against league newcomers Cambridge City. Despite dominating from the start Loughts were unlucky not to take an early lead. They were denied a goal in the opening minutes when a short corner strike by Katie Richards hit the woodwork. Shortly afterwards the Cambridge keeper was forced to make a brilliant save from a fantastic second phase short corner shot. However, it was City who opened the score sheet midway through the first half with a well-executed penalty corner. Although captain Miranda Weeks came close to equalising late in the first half with a fantastic reverse stick shot that was sent just wide of the post and striker Anna Coppel saw a brilliant short corner deflection disallowed for a foot at the top of the circle, the Ladies went into half time 1-0 down.

Old Loughts continued to dominate the second half and their efforts paid off when Katie Richards (recognising a lapse in concentration by the City keeper) took advantage of a quick self-pass just outside the circle and smashed the ball home. Loughts were back in the game. Despite Leigh Sandison and Becky Halle coming close to pinching the lead late in the second half Louts couldn’t seem to break the deadlock and with the City keeper on fine form they had to settle for a point and a draw. The Ladies are at home on Saturday to Northampton.
