13.04.10 - DISAPPOINTMENT FOR U18 BOYS AT NATIONAL FINALS:
Having gone to Cannock with high hopes and on the back of being U18 National Indoor Club Champions the first match that the lads encountered was against Beeston who were ironically their opponents in the indoor championships. Although starting very brightly the lads missed a few opportunities and this set the pattern for the whole weekend. Two breakaway goals from Beeston who adopted the aerial approach (which we found difficult to defend) could not be matched despite a good Matt Lewis short corner and the final score was 2-1 to Beeston (the first competitive loss that the team have suffered this season). The story of missed opportunities was carried forward to the Cannock game where the teams’ opponents latched on to their three opportunities to put them all away and notwithstanding replies from Adam Miller and Steve Edwards, following an excellent hit in to the D from Michael McMahon, the team were left to rue the day as to what might have been. In the knowledge that they could not win the tournament the U18s played Stourport in their last match and went 1-0 up through a Matt Lewis short corner. The Saturday gremlin returned on the Sunday and opportunity after opportunity was missed. Embarrassingly Stourport almost levelled the game in the last minute but the lads held on to secure the victory and register third place which equalled the position gained last season. Although disappointed the lads will now bounce back in the Mercian League playoffs where they play Canterbury this Sunday at Luxborough Lane.
