20.04.10 - U13 GIRLS WIN TONY SMITH MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT VASE:

The U13 girls competed in the Vase section of the Tony Smith Memorial Tournament at Surbiton HC last Sunday. It was a frantic start with just six players lining up for the first game but luckily the seventh player arrived in the nick of time, although this did not faze the girls. Three back to back games with a pitch change in the middle and a lovely sunny day was not ideal but the girls beat Surbiton A 2-0, Surbiton B 3-0 and Richmond 3-1. With no subs the girls deserved the break. Two more victories against Wimbledon C 6-1 and Guildford B 4-0 saw them top their group and meet Wimbledon B in the semis. As with all the previous games the girls dominated possession but were also lethal on the break and progressed to the final with a 3-0 win. The girls faced Sunbury and had the perfect start with Emily Holmes taking a self pass at the pushback and going through the whole Sunbury team and round the GK to make it 1-0. Loughts dominated but Sarah in the OL goal kept her concentration and made a great save from a Sunbury break which was probably the turning point in the game. The girls moved the ball quickly with some great quick, crisp passing and added 2 more goals to win 3-0. It was a great team effort with Katherine Hough, Hannah Sydenham and Lizzie Wroblewski working tirelessly in midfield creating chances and taking a few themselves. Lucia Corry and Imogen Padwick were firm in defence with perfectly timed strong tackling and then distributing the ball quickly and accurately. The girls scored 24 goals and conceded 2 with Emily scoring 20 goals we think!
