18.05.10 - HAVANT TOURNAMENT:
Two boys teams taken from the years 1995, 96 and 97 together with a girls side were invited to a friendly tournament hosted by Havant HC at the Royal Navy Hockey Club at HMS Temeraire. Owing to previous commitments at school and particularly through cricket the club was not able to field the normal sides as 23 players across the board were unable to make the day. With grateful thanks to other Essex clubs and indeed from Hampshire the elder lads produced some good hockey in the circumstances but lost to Havant and BTHC from Germany with Joshua Madeiros scoring both games. The younger lads played BTHC 2s and two Havant sides to top their league from the morning games. The top two from each league then went into a further competition and the lads ultimately came second losing only to BTHC’s main team. This was an excellent day’s hockey with excellent hospitality and in the hope that we are invited again next year we would encourage as many players as possible to join the sides.
Due to school commitments and exams it was a young side of mainly U14s and U13s girls that travelled to Portsmouth to play in Havant HC’s U15s Tournament. The girls’ first game was against German side BHTC who as expected were tall and strong but OL moved the ball quickly and sharply. Senior girls Harriet Welton and Emma Flynn quickly formed a solid defensive understanding with Lucia Corry and Georgia O'Connor. Three goals from Emily Holmes and two from Rayo Ladipo helped the girls to a 5-2 win. In their second match against Havant, the girls totally dominated. Milly Mordrick, Jade and Georgia Gidney worked tirelessly in midfield keeping Havant on the back foot all the time. Nicole Hayes had a quiet day in goal but stayed alert and dealt well with the few chances that threatened the OL goal. Emily bagged all five goals in a 5-1 win. Many thanks go to all the girls and parents for making the effort to travel to Portsmouth which was a great way to end the season.
